I have a sorrel gelding with light colored hoofs/hooves (spelling ?), I've seen people use black polish on light hoofs. Can I get some input on this. ![[Red Horse]](graemlins/redhorse.gif)

What type of horse is it???? Stock type? I always use black on my guy, he is sorrel and has one white sock... but I do all 4 black if I was going to a AQHA show or showing halter. I do not hoofblack for open shows!

Ditto, QHGIRL:) Appy's use clear on all four hooves. If your QH has only one white sock, I would use black all around! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I don't really. At open levels and with some of the untalented horses I've seen at this show it wouldn't make a big difference.

I hate to say that, but when people put their horses in the western pleasure class and they have lapped you four times by the time you've made around the arena once, it's very aggervating.

Honestly I hate to see black hoof polish on a white hoof! It think it makes the horse's whole leg look weird. I prefer to see clear on any white hoof and think it looks closer to normal. The horse is dressed all up for show yet still shows what it's feet really look like! Since you are going to show AQHA you can do all the hoofs in black but I think if you want to stand out a bit doing it different might help! There is NO rule that says you have to do all 4 hoof all black so I would clean those white hoofs up and put clear polish on them if it was me!
People put hoof polish on their horse's hooves at shows (okay, at SOME shows) because they are dressing up their horse for competition and it is just an additional way of presenting a clean, polished and neat appearance to the judge. [ March 19, 2004, 03:45 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

OH I agree...
I hate to see hoof black on a pleasure horse, it just defeats the purpose, expecially by the time you make it into the arena the hooves are dusty and dirty. NOW I understand if you do halter/showmanship with them, then that is almost a MUST.... BUT for a open show I don't bother anymore. Has not hurt me from winning by not using it, but it could place me 2nd instead of first... just depends what the judge really is looking at.
My guy doesn't have that much white up his leg so it looks OK... I guess I am used to it.
When I used to show arabs, we used to sand them completely smooth and clean with SOS pads and sandpaper to clear coat them... man did that take a lot of time... but those were our halter horses!!!!!!

Yes, I know what you mean about the Arabians! Grooming them for shows has become an "Art Form" that you sure had better know how to do if you even hope to be competative!" There is so much you can and can't do to them so you had also better know all the current rules changes too! Now days for halter classes you can no longer use hoof black (although you still can for performance classes) The new rule states:
Article 1607 Conduct & Specification 7. No product shall be applied to a horse's hoof to hide or conceal a conformation defect. Only clear or transparent products may be used on the hooves of horses while being shown in Breeding and/or In-Hand classes. BOD 1/18/04 Effective 3/1/04
You had better really know your stuff if you want your horse's hoofs to look nice for your class! You no longer just brush them off and slap some hoof polish on them! They have to look like they are wearing patent leather in the show ring now days! I do admit I like the look and it is, after all a "show", and you are supposed to be dressing up your horse (and yourself!) and showing off your "Show Horse." With Arabian Horses "presentation" is a big part of their showing! ![[Wink]](wink.gif) [ March 19, 2004, 03:49 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

Oh! Why on earth would you want to cover up beautiful striped hooves? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that is a MAJOR no-no anyway. You want to show off those types of atributes.
Also,I think it is horribly tacky to black out white hooves. Just looks like they were too lazy to clean them up.

What I do is take a brillo pad and scrub the hoofs smooth, once they are dry I take some Kiwi shoe polish and apply it. Black on black hoofs clear on clear...both on striped If I have time I will apply 2 coats! Then I will apply a coat of clear or black hoof polish according to the hoof color. I do like the ultra hoof polishes but will use any brand. One more thing. I like to use to finish the hoofs off with once they are dry is Ultra Hoof Polish Enhancer. I love this stuff!!!! ![[Woot!]](graemlins/woot.gif)

We actually used an electric sander on the feet to get them nice and smooth and sand out any stains. Using a fine grade paper of course. But it works really well!

My paint has striped hooves. Do I wan't to have clear on the white part and black on black? I heard you can put electrical tape so then you can just take it off to put the clear stuff on. She is a tobiano (socks up to chest and hip) M.

If you have the time and a steady horse then go ahead. I like to use the Kiwi Shoe Polish first and then put the other hoof polishes on. I put black on the stripes then once it drys put clear over it and the rest of the hoof. I would not worry about trying to put it on the smaller stripes only the wide ones. Just don't get in the "it has to be perfect" mind-set...back away from your work and look at it from the Judges point of view...plus remember that once the horse enters the ring the deeper the going is the less hoof will show! ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Heres what i would do. Put one foot black and one foot white and see which one you like on him better. Then the one you dont like as well take it off and put the other on. I works for me. My gal has stripe feet so i like to show off her pretty's. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

My horse is bay (brown, black legs) no markings. I would go with clear. I think its mostly preference. But I like it to look more natural. When I showed with my previous instructor I had to use black on the horses hooves. To me it just looked to fake and kinda funny. But like I said its all preference. And you could always try the black and if you didn't like it try the clear next time. I don't think it's really a big deal.

Sometimes using the black hoof polish on white legs makes the feet look larger (which isn't a good thing) But if you have for example, one black fore and one white fore foot and you put black on one and clear on the other it can make the stride look un-eaven, which you dont want. I prefer cleaning the hoovs with a nail brush and water and then using the clear. It looks more natural but classy at the same time.
