Well, im sure most of you have had a problem with your horses tail at one point or another and i was just making sure that i am doing the right thing.... my bay arabian gelding ( grandson of Aladdin) used to have his tail in a wrap and i recently took it out. eversince it has been growing very thick and silky. this is because it is able to "breath" and naturally grow. correct? just wanting to make sure. any tips for smoother silky tails (manes too)? His mane is very thick and can be dry..... will mane' n tale work?

It is getting thicker because the shorter hairs are having a chance to catch up with the longer ones. When a tail is wrapped it is to help it to get longer. Keeping the tail in a tail bag or wrapped keeps hairs from breaking off and allows them to grow long. If the tail is out of the bag/wrap then the tail hairs that are at the bottom of the tail are likely to be broken off and grow no longer so the other hairs have a chance to catch up with the ones longer than them. Thus the reason it gets thicker.(I hope that makes sense... ) The hair is silky because it is most likely recieving more grooming attention from you since it is not wrapped and you are able to get to it. Hair grows from the inside out. It does not breath....granted improper wrapping and neglect of the hair can cause damage and hair loss. Also a tail that has been wrapped too long can get smelly and in poor enough condition it can break off. So that might be where the "letting the tail breath" comes from. I have had tails up for weeks, taken them down washed, dried and oiled them and put them right back up in a braid and wrapped it with vet-wrap with no problem.

*Ditto* Sandra My horses tail was so nasty and short peices everywhere when I got him, I wash and condition about once a week (sometimes he goes a little longer!) and then I put it back up, it's to the ground now:) I personally like Cowboy magic Products, thier detangler and shine is the best that I have found out there. IMO, if you want to keep his tail looking like it does now, keep it up:) The weight of the braid also will promote growth. As for his mane, try using the cowboy magic detangler/shine on it after washing and conditioning it. It worked wonders for our shetland's long straggly mane. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

I love Cowboy Magic.. important note tho.. do not try to comb it halfway between drying.. either come it out while the Cowboy Magic Detangler is wet or after it's dried lol.. a friend of mine pulled out a huge chunk of her horses tail by trying to comb too early... I love this stuff tho.. it doesn't dry like Show Sheen does, but stays in a long time and really conditions the mane and tail.
Personally however, I don't like braiding... I prefer to keep my stallions mane and tail conditioned and brushed out, but it seems to grow better and longer if I don't braid it.. maybe it's the way I braid I dunno.. I have yet to get a tail wrap to stay in his tail.. even the fancy ones u put on and then braid..

WOW, well, horses will shed their hair naturally, much like humans do, so if you do get strands of hair, don't panic, but a big chunk? Wow!! I have never had a problem with the cowboy magic. I let my horses tail dry, put the CM in and comb it through. I then braid and put up in a tail sock.

my favorite conditioner s definetly cowboy magic. I know alot of people that use show sheen but it makes the tail stiff and brittle so just keep teating his tail and yes the wrap had something to do with it. bye

the best thing for a tail to become thicker and londer, is to not brush it, unless you start getting dreadlocks:-)But, if you are going to a show, wash it the night before, put conditioner in it, then take it out before you leave for the show the next day, and rinse, (unless you have a spray conditioner, that does not leave residue)and wrap back up until you get to the show. Especially if you braid it the night before, and use spray, like cowboy magic, or something else, and take it out when you get to the show, it makes it curly, which overall makes the horses tail look much thicker!
Hope this helps Nikki ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I comb my mane (my horse's..not mine!) every day after I spritz Mane & Tail detangler in it (I didn't think it'd work, being it was cheap...anyone know if it is silicone based). My horse's main loses one hair maybe once a week now that I am using the detangler. I don't see what's wrong with brushing it every day. M.

I DO NOT like show sheen it makes the tail stiff and brittle cowboy magic is by far my favorite and it smells good too! I have never wrapped a tail for my uses but Ive seen people at the barn do it a couple of weeks before shows and I know the basic principles, why its done and how its done and I ve done it efore just incase I need to later that way I wont get confused when I actually have to do it! Its very good for the tail ![[Horse On 2]](graemlins/horseon2.gif)

Just speaking about show sheen and other silicone based products, I've never used any on horses, but I have used them on my hair. They make it look great for 2 or 3 days, then your hair gets very dry and tangles more easily. Cowboy Magic works good and is non-silicone. This website also sells Equine Shine which is silicone free.

I brush mine's mane and tail once a day now with a brush like I would use on my hair...His tail and mane have actually thickened and lengthened....I dont' see how it is different than Pulling the mane...
I also braid the tail every so often. His tail is the longest it has ever been.

Pulling the mane is for the purpose of not only evening it but also thinning it. So you're right, it does the same thing, but will not make his tail thicker.
