Hi all. I have read that a little garlic in the horse's daily diet, helps keep flies away. Is it really useful?

Yes, you can use garlic in your horses feed to keep flies away. After ingesting garlic, the horses will sweat it out through their bodies, which keep the flies away. However some horses may have an allergy to garlic, and sometimes too much garlic can be harmful to your horse. For a while I used Garlic in my horses feed, but then after some time I discontinued using it because, (Like I said before) too much can be potentially harmful. You may want to ask a vet about feeding garlic. Most vets would probably recommend using an **** fly supplement instead of garlic.

Hope this helps at all-

HI I think that it might be helpful. My friend uses it faithfully. She buys the gel caps but they are hard to find and she goes to a nutrition store to get them. I think that it may help some, but it does not keep the flies away totally. garlic is also good for thier immune system too. I fed it to my horses for about 2 months but saw no results(as far as flies go) give it a try [Smile]

Thank you. I guess it's better if I try fly repellents after all. Fortunately, flies don't bother my horse much. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Yes, garlic would work. Don't give up on it so soon! There are special feed through garlic products you can buy online (search on Google) that keep flies away. Garlic is good for horses just as it is for humans by keeping colds and fevers away. Also, fly spray is not healthy. If it keeps flies and other bugs away, think about what it does if it gets in your horses digestive system. I've never heard of garlic being harmful to horses if fed too much but I suggest you read about it online.

Although herbal repellents have their place and are good. The benefits of using an insecticidal spray far outway the risk. If the horse does ingest any through licking and such, it will be in very, very small amounts.

vet advice for garlic useage in your horses diet is always best. there is much controversy over garlic and how good it is for horses. allium is a group of plants including onions and garlic which contains a toxic element called N-propyl disulfide. some vets dismiss the reports of garlic causing Heinz-body anemia, while many others discourage prolonged use. your vet would be the best person to talk to and between yourselves, you can decide whether you feel it is safe for the horse to have garlic added to it's feed.

The dry granulated garlic is an easy way of feeding and can be found in bulk bags at Asian supermarkets and at fodder stores. If you can get it in liquid form in bulk that's even better. Not only does garlic come out through the coat and help repel flies, but it can boost the immune system as well as help reduce intestinal worms.

Even though it is an Australian site I do believe that they ship overseas.
